JAKARTA — Jakartaweekly.com. The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta) held a ceremony to commemorate the 81st Anniversary of the Independence day of the Republic of Indonesia at Jakarta City Hall in Gambir, Central Jakarta, on Monday (17 August). Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung served as the ceremony’s inspector, with the event attended by civil servants of the Jakarta Provincial Government, the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda), and other relevant stakeholders.
In his address, Governor Pramono said that independence is a mandate that must be fulfilled through concrete efforts for the benefit of the people, nation, and state.
“Alhamdulillah, the ceremony proceeded well, smoothly, and solemnly. Independence is not merely a legacy to be remembered and celebrated, but a mandate that must be safeguarded and fulfilled through concrete work for the people, nation, and state,” he said.
He stated that Jakarta’s economic resilience continues to show positive performance. Jakarta’s economy grew 5.52 percent in the second quarter of 2026, contributing 16.32 percent to Indonesia’s national gross domestic product (GDP). Inflation also remained under control at 2.5 percent. This performance provides a strong foundation for achieving Jakarta’s target of becoming one of the world’s top 50 global cities by 2030.
Governor Pramono emphasized that economic growth must be accompanied by an equitable distribution of development benefits.
“This achievement serves as an impetus to ensure that the progress of development can be felt equally by the people. Jakarta’s development is directed toward driving economic growth, expanding employment opportunities, reducing inequality, and ensuring that no resident is left behind,” he said.
In terms of human development, Jakarta recorded the highest Human Development Index (HDI) nationally, reaching 85.05 in 2025. The Jakarta Provincial Government continues to expand access to education and improve public welfare through programs including Kartu Jakarta Pintar (KJP) Plus, Kartu Jakarta Mahasiswa Unggul (KJMU), diploma legalization initiatives, labor-intensive programs, and support for the Sekolah Rakyat program.
“Jakarta’s progress must begin with its people. Opportunities to access education and improve quality of life must be opened as widely as possible to break the cycle of disadvantage,” Governor Pramono said.
The Jakarta Provincial Government is also continuing to strengthen public services, healthcare, and connectivity through the development of modern transportation systems and urban infrastructure.
Several projects being advanced include the Jakarta LRT Kelapa Gading–Manggarai route, MRT Phase 2 from Bundaran HI to Kota Tua, the Dukuh Atas Pedestrian Deck, the construction of a hospital on the former Sumber Waras Hospital site, and transportation integration to the Thousand Islands.
“Starting in 2027, sea transportation to the Thousand Islands will be professionally managed by Transjakarta. At the same time, urban spatial planning will continue to be optimized, including the removal of monorail pillars along Jalan H.R. Rasuna Said and strengthening public transportation integration around the JIS–Ancol area,” Governor Pramono explained.
In the environmental sector, the Jakarta Provincial Government continues to promote waste sorting at the source, optimize Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R) Waste Processing Facilities (TPS 3R), and strengthen preparedness for the dry season.
Jakarta is also continuing to strengthen government governance through financing innovations, including municipal bonds, while maintaining an Unqualified Opinion (WTP) from the Audit Board of Indonesia (BPK) for nine consecutive years.
“The spirit of independence today is no longer about physical battles fought with weapons, but about setting aside our egos, listening to one another, and working together. For the Jakarta Provincial Government, freedom means providing the best possible public services so that people feel protected, safe, comfortable, and have a sense of ownership of their city through the spirit of ‘Jaga Jakarta’,” Governor Pramono said.
Concern for other regions was also demonstrated through the deployment of healthcare workers and the provision of IDR 3.8 billion in humanitarian assistance for victims of natural disasters in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The assistance came from voluntary donations made by City Hall civil servants.
To commemorate Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day, the Jakarta Provincial Government introduced a special IDR 8 Transjakarta fare and provided free entertainment at several locations.
“On this occasion, we are also implementing an IDR 8 Transjakarta fare and providing free entertainment at Monas, Bundaran HI, Kota Tua, and the Thousand Islands so that the spirit of independence can be enjoyed by all segments of society,” Governor Pramono concluded.
Meanwhile, Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno expressed his appreciation for the central government’s support in organizing the series of events commemorating Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day in Jakarta. He said that the public entertainment activities from Bundaran HI to Monas were part of a collaboration between the Jakarta Provincial Government, regionally owned enterprises (BUMD), and the national organizing committee.
“We would like to thank the central government for entrusting Jakarta as a key part of the Independence Day celebrations. Through coordination with Jakarta Tourisindo (Jakarta Experience Board/JXB), we are fully supporting around 60 percent of the public celebration activities from HI to Monas as a demonstration of Jakarta’s readiness to embrace the future as a global stage,” he explained.
