Meanwhile, Direktur PT Traze Andalan Futures Ibrahim Assuaibi expects global gold and precious metals prices to strengthen this week. Ibrahim forecast that global gold prices will trade at a support level odf US$4,437 per troy ounce and a resistance level of US$4,766 per troy ounce. Meanwhile, precious metals prices are expected to move with support at Rp2,600,000 per gram and resistance at Rp2,864,000 per gram.
“What is driving gold and precious metals prices higher? Geopolitical tension, US policies and the Fed, and a continued surge in gold demand in the third quarter,” Ibrahim said on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
In the Middle East, tensions have escalated again after the US announced plans to impose economic sanctions on Iran. Iran condemned the plan and threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a major global trade route.
Israel has also carried out attacks along the Syrian border, prompting Turkey to intervene. Meanwhile, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues in Eastern Europe.
On US policy, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the government would increase the size of its buyback operations for 10-year and 30-year Treasury bonds from US$2 billion to US$4 billion.
“This is positive because it could prompt investors to sell US Treasuries again, but this is a short-term factor that could push gold prices higher again,” he said.
Meanwhile, the World Gold Council (WGC) recorded central bank gold purchases of 289 tons in the second quarter of 2026. The figure was five times higher than the revised estimate of 57 tons in the first quarter of 2026, marking the highest level recorded for the second quarter.
“We expect investment demand and gold purchases by central banks globally to continue surging toward the end of the third quarter of 2026 due to geopolitical factors,” he said.
