Silmy Karim Case Highlights Importance of Immigration Oversight
The KPK is investigating a massive Rp366.7 billion corruption and extortion scheme involving former Indonesian Deputy Minister of Immigration Silmy Karim and seven other officials. Between 2022 and 2026, officials allegedly deliberately complicated residency permit processes (KITAS/KITAP) to extort additional fees from foreign nationals, distributing the illicit funds weekly. The scandal has sparked calls from legal experts for stricter oversight to prevent public services from being exploited for private gain.
