Indonesia Insurance Assets Reach Rp1,200 Trillion in August

JAKARTA, Jakartaweekly.com — Indonesia’s insurance industry recorded total assets of Rp1,200.55 trillion as of August 2026, up 3.56% year-on-year (yoy), despite a decline in assets held by non-commercial insurance programs, according to the Financial Services Authority (OJK).

Assets held by non-commercial insurance programs, including BPJS Kesehatan, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, and insurance programs for civil servants, the Indonesian Military (TNI), and the National Police (Polri), reached Rp218.37 trillion in August. However, the total declined by 1.85% yoy, following a 2.44% annual contraction in July.

Ogi Prastomiyono, Chief Executive of OJK’s Insurance, Guarantee and Pension Fund Supervision Department, said fluctuations in investment assets, particularly equity instruments, had partly influenced the industry’s performance.

Ogi made the remarks during a press conference on Monday, October 5, 2026. While total insurance industry assets increased annually, they declined by 0.06% compared with the end of 2025.

Commercial Insurance Assets Rise

Commercial insurance assets reached Rp982.18 trillion in August, growing by 3.59% yoy. Cumulative insurance premium income also increased, reaching Rp255.40 trillion, up 2.66% from the same period last year.

Life insurance premiums amounted to Rp125.75 trillion, representing annual growth of 7.01%. In contrast, general insurance and reinsurance premiums contracted by 2.35% yoy to Rp99.61 trillion.

Despite differing premium growth trends, the sector’s capital adequacy remained above regulatory requirements. The combined Risk-Based Capital (RBC) ratio for the life and general insurance industries stood at 471.57%, while the reinsurance industry recorded an RBC ratio of 331.52%.

Both ratios remained well above the regulatory minimum of 120%, indicating that the sectors continued to maintain capital levels exceeding the required threshold.

Pension Fund Assets Grow 6.99%

Indonesia’s pension fund industry recorded stronger growth, with total assets reaching Rp1,724.14 trillion in August 2026, up 6.99% yoy. This exceeded the 6.70% annual growth recorded in July.

On a year-to-date (YTD) basis, pension fund assets increased by 2.66% as of August, supported by higher investment assets in government securities, Ogi said.

Voluntary pension programs held assets worth Rp412.39 trillion, representing annual growth of 4.31%. This was slightly higher than the 4.24% growth recorded in July.

Mandatory pension programs recorded total assets of Rp1,311.75 trillion, up 7.86% yoy compared with 7.51% in July.

These programs include old-age security and pension benefits managed by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, as well as old-age savings and accumulated pension contributions for civil servants, TNI personnel and Polri personnel.

The figures indicate that both voluntary and mandatory pension programs continued to expand, with mandatory programs recording the stronger annual growth rate.

Guarantee Industry Assets Contract

In contrast, the guarantee industry experienced a contraction in August. Total assets fell by 5.17% yoy and 2.55% YTD to Rp46.30 trillion.

The annual decline was deeper than the 5.05% contraction recorded in July, reflecting continued pressure on the sector.

OJK expects the insurance, guarantee and pension fund (PPDP) sector to maintain positive growth through the end of 2026, although performance is likely to be more moderate than initially targeted at the beginning of the year.

Ogi attributed the more cautious outlook to mounting pressure on the global economy and its effects on financial markets.

OJK projects that the insurance sector will grow by 2%–4% by the end of 2026, while pension fund programs are expected to expand by 4%–6%.

The outlook for the guarantee sector remains part of OJK’s broader assessment of the PPDP industry. However, the source information provided did not specify the projected asset growth range for the sector.

Overall, the August figures show continued expansion in commercial insurance and pension funds, alongside declining assets in non-commercial insurance programs and the guarantee industry. OJK expects the sector to remain on a positive growth trajectory, while external economic pressures may moderate its performance in the remaining months of 2026.
