Djakarta Ennichi 2026 Abruptly Canceled Due to Technical and Operational Issues

JAKARTA — Jakartaweekly.com The annual Japanese cultural festival, Djakarta Ennichi 2026, was abruptly canceled on Saturday (May 23, 2026). The cancellation announcement was posted via the organizer’s official social media accounts at around 2:00 AM WIB, just hours before the event was scheduled to kick off at Lapangan Banteng, Jakarta.

In an official statement uploaded to the Instagram account @djakartaennichi, the organizers expressed their deepest apologies to everyone affected by the decision.

“With a heavy heart, we announce that the Djakarta Ennichi cultural festival at Lapangan Banteng is officially canceled,” the official announcement read, as quoted from Kompas.com.

The organizers explained that unforeseen technical and operational issues forced them to call off the event.

“This difficult decision had to be made due to technical and operational constraints that impacted the overall readiness of the event. As a result, we are unable to present a festival that is safe, comfortable, and optimal for everyone,” the organizers wrote.

The sudden cancellation immediately sparked a wave of disappointment across various groups, from prospective visitors and tenant participants to the performers who were ready to take the stage. One widely highlighted reaction came from the DeiMaru cosplay shop, which revealed that their merchandise was already neatly set up at their booth right before they received the sudden news that the tents were being dismantled.

Similar frustration was voiced by many visitors who had already paid for transport and accommodation, including several guests from outside Jakarta and even from abroad who had traveled specifically for the festival. One viral comment highlighted that several guests from Japan had been officially invited by the organizers.

The situation came as a shock since physical preparations at the venue appeared to be nearly complete. The main stage and numerous tenant tents were reportedly already standing at the Lapangan Banteng area before the entire setup had to be packed up and dismantled.

Concluding their announcement, the organizers expressed hope to meet fans again at a future opportunity.

What is the Djakarta Ennichi Festival?

According to its official website, Djakarta Ennichi is an international-scale Japanese cultural festival held in Jakarta. It is touted as a “new chapter” of the Ennichisai festival tradition, which was previously synonymous with the Blok M area. This new festival was born out of a new community and committee, many of whom were previously involved in organizing Ennichisai.

The name “Ennichisai” is no longer used because that annual festival belonged to the South Jakarta Municipal Government and was last held in 2019. Consequently, this new festival emerged under a different identity named Djakarta Ennichi.

The festival was designed as a free, unticketed Japanese cultural event that showcases various Japanese and Indonesian attractions in one location. Visitors were planned to enjoy a mikoshi parade, taiko performances, bon odori, yosakoi, cosplay, Japanese culinary stalls, and traditional Betawi arts.

In addition to Japanese pop culture entertainment, Djakarta Ennichi also brought forward a concept of cultural collaboration between Indonesia and Japan. The festival even claimed to feature participation from 47 Japanese prefectures, alongside cultural and economic cooperation programs between the two countries.

A Showcase of Japanese Culture in Jakarta

For its 2026 edition, the festival carried the theme “Shinshou” or “New Chapter.” The committee stated that the theme represented the convergence of Japanese cultural history in Jakarta with Jakarta’s own historic identity as a global city and a center of creativity.

The festival was originally scheduled to take place on May 23-24, 2026, at Lapangan Banteng, Central Jakarta, targeting 30,000 to 40,000 visitors. Previously, the Ennichisai festival in Blok M could attract over 300,000 visitors during a single event run.

However, Djakarta Ennichi 2026 was officially canceled just hours before it was set to begin. The committee cited technical and operational challenges that impacted the overall readiness of the event as the reason for the cancellation.
