HAMBURG, Jakartaweekly.com—Korean Register (KR) is accelerating its European business expansion strategy by establishing the North Europe Committee (KRNEC) and hosting a technical seminar in Hamburg, Germany.
KR Chairman & CEO Lee Yongsok stated that deepening engagement with partners in key regions has been one of his top priorities since taking the helm of the company earlier this year. He emphasized that the establishment of the North Europe Committee marks a concrete step toward expanding regional cooperation.
“Since I took leadership of KR earlier this year, reinforcing engagement with partners in key regions has been a top priority. The formation of the North Europe Committee is a concrete step in that direction,” Lee said on Monday, June 1, 2026.
He added that the dialogue fostered within this forum will serve as a vital foundation for the future development of the company’s services. According to Lee, open and constructive discussions will enable KR to enhance its services while supporting the sustainable growth of the global maritime industry.
This move, he noted, is part of KR’s ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with the North European maritime sector, which is widely recognized as a pivotal hub in the global shipping industry.
As part of the event lineup, KR hosted the North Europe Technical Seminar, drawing over 60 maritime industry professionals. The seminar addressed several strategic topics, ranging from the post-MEPC 84 implications of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and decarbonization strategies for existing container ships, to the introduction of its AI-driven platform, Marinote.AI.
KR also presented its decarbonization decision-support tools, namely KR PILOT and POWER, which are designed to assist the shipping industry in navigating the energy transition and increasingly stringent environmental regulations.
Furthermore, the seminar featured industry insights from GSR Services CEO Henning Gramann, who highlighted Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) compliance and the tightening ship recycling regulations within the global maritime sector.
Following the seminar, KR officially inaugurated its new office in Hamburg during a reception attended by more than 150 guests from the international maritime community. The relocation is deemed a strategic move to bolster KR’s services across the North European region.
On the second day, KR convened the inaugural meeting of the KRNEC, which brought together 11 senior executives from the North European maritime industry. The forum deliberated on core industry issues, including updates on international shipping regulations and industry response strategies to global policy shifts.
During the meeting, Guido Försterling from Sloman Neptun was appointed as the first Chairman of KRNEC.
Through these initiatives, KR reaffirms its focus on strengthening its European network and driving the maritime industry’s transformation toward greener and more environmentally friendly operations.
