JAKARTA, Jakartaweekly.com— State-owned shipping firm PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (PELNI) has launched a series of environmental initiatives to mark World Environment Day, focusing on reforestation and a circular economy-based waste management system across its operational areas.
PELNI’s Director of Finance and Risk Management, Anik Hidayati, said the management recognizes the critical need to balance industrial operations with environmental preservation.
“We are continuously pushing for sustainability initiatives, from greening programs to waste management, that not only protect the environment but also generate social and economic value for local communities,” Anik said in Jakarta on Saturday, June 6, 2026.
The reforestation program spans several of PELNI’s key operational hubs, including Ternate, Sampit, Parepare, and Bima, where the company has planted over 200 tree seedlings. Apart from conservation, the initiative aims to mitigate climate change by expanding green open spaces around its facilities.
In tandem with the greening efforts, PELNI is tackling operational waste by upcycling expired life jackets into eco-friendly bags and shoes.
“This program applies circular economy principles. It doesn’t just cut down our operational waste, but it also adds value by creating products with real economic benefits,” Anik explained.
Upcycled products under this initiative consist of roughly 71 percent recycled life jacket material. Manufacturing a single pair of these recycled shoes repurposes 227 grams of waste, cuts carbon emissions by up to 5.244 kilograms of CO2-equivalent, and saves 755.56 liters of water compared to conventional production methods.
The initiative has also driven social impact, providing a financial boost to local artisans. Around 44 percent of those involved in the production chain are women, mostly housewives and members of the local Family Welfare Movement (PKK).
“As a result, the program does more than just help nature—it empowers the communities living around our operational zones,” she noted.
PELNI teamed up with local Environmental Departments (DLH) to execute the reforestation drive. Through this partnership, the company aims to foster long-term conservation while boosting public participation in environmental care.
“Sustainability is more than a corporate commitment; it is our responsibility to future generations. Working with various stakeholders, we will continue to deliver programs that positively impact the environment, society, and national development,” Anik said.
The management expects these steps to deliver long-term ecological benefits, curb operational waste, improve environmental quality, and inspire wider public action in conservation efforts.
