JAKARTA, JakartaWeekly.com — PT Pertamina (Persero) and Jakarta Wastewater Management Regional Public Company (PAL Jaya) are exploring the potential use of fat, oil, and grease (FOG) as feedstock for biofuels, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
The initiative was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) by Pertamina Deputy President Director Oki Muraza and PAL Jaya President Director Untung Suryadi at Balai Agung, Jakarta City Hall, on Monday (Oct. 12, 2026).
Oki Muraza said the collaboration is part of Pertamina’s initiatives to support the energy transition and efforts to achieve low-carbon emission targets sustainably.
“The signing of this memorandum of understanding is part of Pertamina’s initiatives toward the clean energy transition, while also supporting efforts to achieve low-carbon emission targets sustainably,” Oki said recently.
Under the MoU, Pertamina and PAL Jaya will further assess the potential use of FOG generated and/or managed by PAL Jaya as an alternative feedstock for biofuel development.
The initiative opens opportunities for collaboration between the energy sector and wastewater management through a circular economy approach. This approach views waste not as the end of a process, but as a resource that may still be put to productive use.
For Pertamina, the initiative forms part of its efforts to develop a low-carbon business by optimizing alternative resource potential.
The waste-to-energy approach also creates opportunities to identify ways to add value to waste while supporting the development of low-carbon energy.
Both parties will conduct further assessments to identify the potential use of FOG as biofuel feedstock. The findings are expected to provide a basis for identifying opportunities for further collaboration.
The initiative also offers potential to create added value through sustainable waste utilization. The assessment process will help both parties better understand the available potential before determining the next steps.
