JAKARTA – Jakartaweekly.com, The Jakarta Provincial Government has temporarily suspended the implementation of Car Free Day (CFD), locally known as Hari Bebas Kendaraan Bermotor (HBKB), on HR Rasuna Said Street on Sunday (May 17). The program is scheduled to resume in June 2026 after several field evaluations are addressed.
Head of Jakarta Transportation Agency Syafrin Liputo said the evaluation results showed that the CFD program along the Rasuna Said corridor has provided benefits for the public, both in terms of public space and environmental quality.
“HBKB on HR Rasuna Said Street provides additional alternatives for sports activities and public space for residents. Air quality measurements around the area during the event were also recorded as better compared to regular working days,” Syafrin said in Jakarta on Saturday (May 16).
According to him, the existence of the Rasuna Said CFD has also helped reduce visitor density in the Sudirman–Thamrin area. Based on data from the Jakarta Transportation Agency, the number of visitors to the provincial-level CFD along the Jalan Jenderal Sudirman–MH Thamrin corridor declined from 29,256 people on May 3, 2026, to 13,759 people on May 10, 2026, representing a decrease of around 52.97 percent.
“This condition indicates that the HBKB on HR Rasuna Said can help distribute public activity concentrations away from Sudirman–Thamrin, allowing community activities to spread more evenly,” Syafrin explained.
However, the CFD implementation on May 10 still revealed several issues requiring improvement. These included the absence of turning points on the east and west sides of the corridor, incomplete Transjakarta lane barriers, and illegal parking found at several locations.
In addition, the arrangement of MSME vendors still needs improvement, as some trading activities expanded into road areas. Several ongoing roadwork projects along alternative routes also contributed to traffic congestion.
The Transportation Agency also noted uneven road surfaces following the dismantling of monorail pillars, as well as crowd concentration around Plaza Festival, causing runners and cyclists to use Transjakarta bus lanes.
Syafrin confirmed that all of these issues would be addressed jointly by the inter-agency HBKB working team. The Jakarta administration is also preparing a legal framework as the basis for implementing HBKB on HR Rasuna Said Street.
“Improvements to supporting facilities and the management of public activities will be carried out to ensure that the HBKB on Rasuna Said is safer, more comfortable, and more orderly,” he stated.
The HBKB program on HR Rasuna Said Street is planned to resume starting June 2026 every Sunday from 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Western Indonesia Time. The Jakarta administration hopes that the new HBKB corridor will expand public access to open spaces for exercise and social interaction in the city.
