JAKARTA, Jakartaweekly.com — The Jakarta Provincial Government has prepared a series of events to commemorate the city’s 499th anniversary, highlighting new infrastructure projects, urban revitalization efforts, and environmental initiatives aimed at strengthening Jakarta’s transformation into a global city.
The celebrations, scheduled for June 21–22, 2026, will showcase key developments designed to improve urban connectivity, enhance environmental sustainability, and support greater mobility for residents.
The anniversary program will begin on Sunday, June 21, with the inauguration of the H.R. Rasuna Said Corridor from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. at Setiabudi Integritas Bus Stop. As part of the ceremony, the stop will officially be renamed “Setiabudi Integritas” to symbolize the promotion of anti-corruption values and integrity within Jakarta’s public spaces.
Later that morning, the city will hold the Jaga Jakarta Waste Sorting Readiness Rally from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on the western side of the National Monument (Monas). The event aims to encourage residents to adopt waste sorting practices at the household level and support a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment.
The city government will also break ground on the Dukuh Atas Pedestrian Deck from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. beside the General Sudirman Statue. The project is expected to improve intermodal transportation connectivity and further strengthen Dukuh Atas as Jakarta’s integrated transit hub.
“I invite all residents to experience the new face of Jakarta,” Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said in a statement.
“Come and see the improved Rasuna Said area, start sorting waste from home through the Jaga Jakarta movement, welcome the development of the Dukuh Atas Pedestrian Deck, and make use of the new access connecting JIS and Ancol. A progressive Jakarta is not only built by the government but also maintained collectively by its citizens,” he added.
On Monday, June 22—the official anniversary date—the Jakarta administration will inaugurate the integrated JIS–Ancol Corridor in North Jakarta. The event will include the opening of a new pedestrian bridge and entrance gate connecting the area, as well as the activation and trial operation of the new JIS commuter rail station.
The infrastructure is expected to improve accessibility and transportation integration while supporting the development of Jakarta International Stadium as an international sports and entertainment destination.
According to Suharini Eliawati, Assistant for Economic and Financial Affairs at the Jakarta Regional Secretariat and Chair of the 499th Anniversary Committee, the celebrations are intended not only to mark the city’s birthday but also to demonstrate tangible development achievements that directly benefit residents.
“The 499th anniversary celebration serves as an opportunity to showcase Jakarta’s ongoing transformation efforts,” Eliawati said. “Through urban revitalization, stronger environmental awareness, and integrated infrastructure development, we aim to create a city that is more comfortable, modern, and competitive for all residents.”
The anniversary festivities will continue on June 27–28 with public festivals, cultural activities, and entertainment events across the city.
As Jakarta approaches its historic 500th anniversary in 2027, Eliawati emphasized the importance of collaboration among government institutions, businesses, and residents.
“Jakarta continues to evolve and move forward as it approaches its fifth century,” she said. “We invite all residents to celebrate by maintaining cleanliness, public order, and supporting the city’s development programs. Through collaboration, we can build Jakarta into an inclusive, sustainable, and globally competitive city.”
The 499th anniversary celebrations serve as both a reflection on Jakarta’s progress and a preview of the city’s broader ambitions as it prepares to mark its 500th year next year.
