Pramono Pushes EMV Contactless Payment Across Public Transport

JAKARTA, Jakartaweekly.com — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung wants contactless credit card payments, or EMV Contactless, to be expanded beyond MRT Jakarta to include LRT Jakarta, Transjakarta, Transjabodetabek, and the government-built LRT network.

The Jakarta governor officially launched the EMV Contactless ticket payment system for MRT Jakarta at Bundaran HI Station in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

“I hope that in the future this system will not only be used on MRT Jakarta, but also on LRT Jakarta, Transjakarta, Transjabodetabek, and the LRT operated by the central government,” Pramono said in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

He said implementing the EMV Contactless ticket payment system across all public transportation networks would allow residents and tourists to transfer seamlessly between different modes of transport using a single integrated payment system.

Pramono said the launch of the EMV Contactless payment system on MRT Jakarta marked the first implementation of the technology in Indonesia’s public transportation sector.

With the new system, passengers can simply tap in and tap out using contactless credit cards without purchasing a dedicated transit card or topping up stored-value balances.

“Today, we officially launched the EMV Contactless ticket payment system on MRT Jakarta. This is the first of its kind in Indonesia, allowing people to use contactless credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard directly without having to purchase a special transit card,” he said.

According to Pramono, a convenient payment system is one of the key factors in strengthening Jakarta’s competitiveness as a global city. He noted that similar systems have already been adopted in major cities around the world, including Singapore, Tokyo, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Sydney, and New York.

“As a global city, Jakarta must stand alongside cities that have already implemented this system. It will not only provide greater convenience but also make Jakarta more attractive to tourists visiting the city,” he said.

Based on data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Jakarta, more than 2.5 million international visitors traveled to Jakarta throughout 2024. With the EMV Contactless system, foreign tourists can use MRT Jakarta immediately without purchasing a transit card or exchanging cash to top up a stored-value card.

The launch of the service is the result of collaboration between the Jakarta Provincial Government, Bank Indonesia, PT MRT Jakarta, Bank Mandiri, Mastercard, Visa, and several national banks. The partnership is expected to further accelerate the digitalization of public transportation services while expanding payment options for commuters.
