JAKARTA, Jakartaweekly.com— To mark World Mangrove Day, observed annually on July 26, PT Kereta Api Logistik planted 270 mangrove seedlings in the coastal area of Marunda, North Jakarta.
Kalog Vice President of Corporate Secretary Dwi Wulandari said the mangrove planting is part of the company’s commitment to environmental conservation and climate change mitigation.
“This mangrove planting is one manifestation of the company’s commitment to creating a positive environmental impact while strengthening collaboration with local communities and stakeholders,” she said in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
Dwi explained that mangrove rehabilitation was chosen because the ecosystem plays a vital role in protecting coastal areas. Mangroves help prevent coastal erosion and tidal surges, provide habitats for various marine species, and have a high capacity to absorb and store carbon.
She said mangrove rehabilitation is considered one of the nature-based solutions that can support climate change mitigation while improving environmental quality.
The company estimates that planting the 270 mangrove seedlings will contribute to carbon sequestration.
Based on estimates using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodology, assuming an 80% survival rate, or about 216 trees, the planting is expected to produce approximately 3.24 metric tons of dry biomass during the first five years.
Using a carbon content factor of 47%, the biomass is estimated to store around 1.52 metric tons of carbon, equivalent to approximately 5.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e).
According to Dwi, the estimated carbon sequestration demonstrates that mangrove rehabilitation can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while strengthening the resilience of coastal ecosystems.
She added that mangrove planting has become an annual program under the company’s Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) initiatives. In 2025, the company planted 500 mangrove seedlings in the coastal area of Muara Gembong, Bekasi Regency.
The company has also carried out similar programs in its operational areas. As of mid-2026, Kalog’s Eastern Region had planted a total of 3,600 mangrove seedlings in phases since 2023.
Through the program, Dwi said, Kalog aims to support the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 14 on Life Below Water, as well as the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
