Ahead of 2026 School Holidays, Tourism Ministry Urges Safety Inspections for High-Risk Attractions

JAKARTA, Jakartaweekly.com — Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism has urged tourism destination operators to conduct regular safety inspections and maintenance of facilities, particularly high-risk attractions, ahead of the 2026 school holiday season.

The appeal was outlined in Tourism Minister Circular Letter No. SE/3/HK.01.03/MP/2026 on the Implementation of Safe, Comfortable, and Enjoyable Tourism Activities During the 2026 School Holidays, signed on June 4, 2026.

Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said the expected increase in public mobility during the holiday season must be accompanied by stronger safety measures across tourism destinations.

Under the circular, destination operators are encouraged to consistently and strictly implement standard operating procedures (SOPs), occupational health and safety (OHS) standards, and tourism industry standards.

Operators are also required to ensure that all tourism facilities and attractions are in proper operating condition before being used by visitors.

“Operators are also urged to carry out regular safety inspections and maintenance of facilities and attractions, particularly those classified as high-risk,” Widiyanti said in Jakarta recently.

According to Widiyanti, the school holiday period is one of the peak seasons for domestic travel, driving a significant increase in tourism activities nationwide. The surge in visitor traffic could lead to congestion at tourist destinations and supporting facilities.

She noted that higher visitor numbers may also increase various risks that require heightened preparedness from all stakeholders. These include safety-related incidents, potential natural disasters, extreme weather conditions, and visitor compliance with regulations and safety guidelines.

The ministry has therefore called on transportation operators and destination managers to ensure that all transportation services, viewing platforms, and amusement rides meet operational and safety standards before being put into service.

“Transportation operators and destination managers are expected to ensure that all modes of transport, observation decks, and amusement rides comply with safety and operational standards so that they can operate properly,” she said.

In addition to tourism operators, the circular was also addressed to regional governments, urging them to strengthen oversight of tourism destination operations. Local administrations are asked to ensure compliance with Indonesian National Standards (SNI) related to Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and Environmental Sustainability (CHSE), as well as to ensure that tourism activities are conducted in accordance with applicable SOPs.

The ministry expects these measures to help minimize accident risks and safeguard tourists during the 2026 school holiday period, which is projected to drive higher travel activity across destinations nationwide.
