Indonesia’s Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, highlighted the Ministry of Finance’s success in combating illegal trade through the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC). From January to November 2024, 31,275 enforcement actions were carried out.

“Since the beginning of 2024, there have been 31,275 anti-smuggling operations in customs and excise, averaging more than 5,000 cases per month. The total value of seized goods reached IDR 6.1 trillion, with potential state losses estimated at IDR 3.9 trillion,” Sri Mulyani stated during a press conference at the DJBC Headquarters in Jakarta on Thursday (14/11/2024).

Sri Mulyani revealed that textile and textile products (TPT) dominated illegal import cases, with 12,495 enforcement actions amounting to IDR 4.6 trillion.

“This is troubling for many citizens, but at the same time, we see these goods widely available in the market,” the Minister noted.

On the export side, 382 actions targeted commodities like flora and fauna, with a total value of IDR 255 billion. Marine patrols successfully thwarted the smuggling of lobster seeds and tin sand.

“There were four enforcement actions against lobster seed smuggling worth IDR 163.7 billion. Additionally, five operations seized 84.18 tons of tin sand valued at IDR 10.9 billion,” she explained.

Exports of textile products accounted for 178 cases, with goods valued at IDR 38 billion.

In the excise sector, 18,225 enforcement actions were primarily directed at illegal cigarette trades, involving 710 million items worth IDR 1.1 trillion.

“This achievement by Customs and Excise is made possible through excellent cooperation with law enforcement, the TNI, and the National Intelligence Agency (BIN),” said Sri Mulyani.

Since early 2024, 183 smuggling cases have entered criminal investigation stages, with 193 individuals designated as suspects.

“We have successfully recovered IDR 55.6 billion in state revenue from 1,390 excise-related enforcement actions. Together with Deputy Minister Anggito, we will continue to focus on law enforcement and optimizing state revenue,” Sri Mulyani concluded.

This significant crackdown demonstrates Indonesia’s commitment to safeguarding its economy and resources, deterring illegal activities, and strengthening state revenue collection efforts.
