JAKARTA, Jakartaweekly.com — Indonesia head into their final Group A match against Bangladesh on Thursday, October 1, 2026, with little room for error as they fight to keep their FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 hopes alive.

The Garuda have four points, level with Malaysia but behind on goal difference. After a 0-0 draw with Malaysia at SUGBK, Indonesia now need a decisive result against Bangladesh while maintaining the defensive discipline and attacking intent required to secure their place in the final.

The match will also put John Herdman’s tactical decisions under pressure as Indonesia look to turn their attacking opportunities into goals. A victory would take Indonesia to seven points and strengthen their position in the Group A race.

Thailand have already secured their place in the final after finishing top of Group B, while the remaining qualification places in the group are still being contested. For Indonesia, however, the immediate task is clear: beat Bangladesh and put themselves in the strongest possible position before the final Group A standings are decided.

Goal Difference Could Decide Indonesia’s Fate

Goal difference could become a decisive factor in Indonesia’s bid to reach the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 final.

Malaysia currently lead Group A with four points and a +3 goal difference, while Indonesia also have four points but a +2 margin. The one-goal difference makes every goal potentially important in the final group match.

A draw against Bangladesh would take Indonesia to five points, but would not guarantee qualification. A defeat would leave Indonesia on four points and eliminate their chance of finishing top of Group A.

The other key Group A match will see Malaysia face Singapore at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung. Both matches will be played simultaneously, meaning the Malaysia-Singapore result could directly affect Indonesia’s final position.

Indonesia would move to seven points with a victory over Bangladesh. They would finish top of Group A if Malaysia fail to beat Singapore. If teams finish level on points, however, Indonesia’s margin of victory could become important.

Singapore remain in contention with three points. A victory over Malaysia would take Singapore to six points, while a draw would leave Malaysia on five points.

Indonesia’s immediate objective, therefore, is to beat Bangladesh and strengthen their goal difference before the final result from Bandung determines the Group A standings.
