Pramono Heads to New York at Invitation of Mayor Zohran Mamdani

NEW YORK  — Jakartaweekly.com. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung departed for New York City on Thursday, September 17, at the invitation of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to attend the Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit 2026.

U20 is a G20 engagement group that provides a platform for mayors and leaders of major cities around the world to share urban perspectives and policy recommendations. Jakarta has long been part of U20 and has actively participated in intercity cooperation to address common urban challenges.

In an invitation letter dated July 27, 2026, Mayor Mamdani invited Governor Pramono to join city leaders from around the world in New York to discuss solutions to a range of urban issues, including affordable housing, climate change, human mobility, and economic opportunities.

Jakarta-New York Cooperation

In addition to attending the U20 Mayors Summit, Governor Pramono is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Mayor Mamdani on Sunday, September 20.

The meeting will discuss potential areas of direct cooperation between Jakarta and New York, particularly public transportation and clean air, water management and coastal resilience, waste management, and food affordability.

Through the meeting, the Jakarta provincial government aims to turn intercity cooperation into concrete programmes that can benefit residents of both cities.

As part of the same visit, Governor Pramono is also scheduled to speak at a Heat Roundtable held with C40 Cities, Harvard University’s Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability, and the Atlantic Council’s Climate Resilience Center.

The forum will bring together city leaders, including the mayors of Freetown and Paris, to exchange experiences on urban heat challenges and climate resilience.

Cooperation in Sports and Tourism

Governor Pramono is also scheduled to sign a Letter of Intent with New York University (NYU) during the visit.

The proposed cooperation will support the development of Jakarta’s sports and tourism industries, including event marketing and management, through education and international collaboration.

“This series of visits is an opportunity for Jakarta to strengthen its role in international intercity cooperation, while bringing home knowledge and partnerships that can be applied to improve public services and the quality of life of Jakarta residents,” Pramono said.
