JAKARTA, Jakartaweekly.com The Ministry of Tourism is accelerating tourism safety training nationwide, targeting all 38 provinces through the Tugas Pembantuan (co-administration) scheme. The program focuses on strengthening the capacity of tourism human resources, particularly in risk mitigation and emergency preparedness at destinations.

The move comes amid shifting traveler behavior, with tourists becoming increasingly sensitive to safety considerations. Destinations are no longer judged solely on their visual appeal, but also on their ability to deliver a safe and comfortable experience.

Deputy for Resources and Institutional Affairs at the Ministry of Tourism, Martini Mohamad Paham, said the training is designed to equip tourism stakeholders with practical, on-the-ground skills. The curriculum covers hazard identification, risk mitigation measures, and rapid response to incidents.

“Safety standards must be implemented consistently across all destinations. This is where the role of human resources becomes critical,” she said in a press statement on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

Beyond improving individual competencies, the program also aims to harmonize safety procedures across regions. With more standardized protocols, the government expects tourists to receive consistent levels of protection wherever they travel.

The ministry emphasized that effective implementation will largely depend on local governments. Provincial tourism offices are expected to serve as key drivers, from organizing training to overseeing the application of safety standards at destinations.

“Tourism safety cannot be handled by a single party. Cross-sector collaboration is essential to ensure the program runs effectively,” Martini added.

The initiative is also part of a broader effort to develop tourism human resources, including strengthening awareness of occupational safety and health, as well as environmental sustainability. Through this approach, the government aims to promote more professional and sustainable tourism services.

Assistant Deputy for Community Capacity Building, Ika Kusuma Permana Sari, noted that regional readiness will be a key determinant of the program’s success. She stressed that training alone will not have a meaningful impact without strong local commitment to implementation and oversight.

“We want to ensure that every region is fully prepared so that the benefits can be directly felt at tourism destinations,” she said.

The ministry also underscored the importance of accountability in program execution, both technically and administratively. Each activity is expected to go beyond training and translate into concrete implementation on the ground.

By strengthening human capital and enhancing coordination between central and regional governments, the program is expected to lay the foundation for improving the competitiveness of Indonesia’s tourism sector. The government believes that safety assurance will be a decisive factor in attracting tourists, particularly amid intensifying global competition.
