Consistent in Supporting NZE, MIND ID Group Plants 126,000 Mangroves

Indonesia’s State-Owned Mining Industry Holding Company, MIND ID, consistently supports the achievement of the net zero emission (NZE) target through a coastal mangrove planting program.

The MIND ID Group, consisting of PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium, PT Timah Tbk, and PT Vale Indonesia Tbk, proactively collaborates with communities and youth groups in this program.

Throughout 2024, the MIND ID Group has realized the planting of mangrove trees totaling more than 126,000 seedlings.

Corporate Secretary of MIND ID, Heri Yusuf, stated that MIND ID and all its Group Members recognize the importance of mangrove existence in coastal areas.

Moreover, the total average carbon storage in mangrove ecosystems is estimated to reach 441–1085 MgC/ha and can be a support in achieving the government’s NZE target.

“The MIND ID Group’s mangrove planting program is not just about trees to protect the coast, but also a hope for a more sustainable future for Indonesia,” he said.

Furthermore, Heri explained that in Southeast Sulawesi, PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (Antam) Kolaka Nickel Business Unit planted 60,000 mangrove seedlings throughout 2024 in Pomalaa District.

This figure adds to the 90,000 mangrove seedlings planted by Antam in 2023 in the same location, with a total area reaching 55 hectares.

In Lampung, Bukit Asam’s Tarahan Port Unit consistently carries out mangrove planting with the Bina Jaya Lestari Forest Farmers Group.

Around 30,000 seedlings have been planted in the Cuku Nyi Nyi Ecotourism Area, which has now developed into a seedling center and micro-enterprise.

On Sejarah Beach, Batu Bara, North Sumatra, INALUM has planted more than 51,000 seedlings and maintains approximately 20 hectares of mangrove area.

In Gresik, Freeport Indonesia has also planted 50,000 mangrove seedlings since September 2024 and is collaborating with the environmental agency and educational communities.

In the Riau Islands and Bangka Belitung, PT Timah completed the planting of 15,500 mangrove trees in July 2024.

Meanwhile, in the Morowali area, Vale Indonesia also consistently plants thousands of mangrove seedlings and involves students and fishing groups to maintain the sustainability of coastal areas.

Heri added that the positive impact of mangrove planting is not only absorbing carbon to support NZE but also making coastal ecosystems more stable, preventing abrasion, erosion, and land degradation, as well as protecting the coast from storm impacts.

According to him, this more conducive condition has enabled communities to attract tourists and open businesses.

“Of course, this is also a benefit that the MIND ID Group wants to present. We hope the presence of mangroves can benefit both the environment and the community’s economy,” he concluded.
