JAKARTA, Indonesia (JakartaWeekly.com) – Indonesia is cementing its status as a premier global gastronomic destination, with two of its flagship dining establishments securing prestigious spots on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2026 list.
At a high-profile ceremony held in Hong Kong on March 25, the Jakarta-based August and Ubud’s Locavore NXT were recognized for their innovative approaches to Nusantara flavors. The accolades come alongside a major individual win for the country, as the region’s top pastry honors were also awarded to an Indonesian talent.
The Rise of Contemporary Jakarta
Securing the 42nd spot, August has officially defended its title as the best restaurant in Indonesia. Under the leadership of Chef Hans Christian, the Sequis Tower establishment has climbed seven places from its 2025 ranking.
The restaurant is being hailed for its “refined and intimate” dining experience that balances contemporary European techniques with a deep-rooted Indonesian identity. However, the night’s biggest surprise came from the pastry kitchen. August’s Ardika Dwitama was crowned Asia’s Best Pastry Chef 2026, a recognition of his ability to transform local ingredients—such as jasmine sencha, mulberry, and fermented pineapple—into imaginative modern desserts.
Bali’s Progressive Plate
Meanwhile, in the lush highlands of Bali, Locavore NXT made a meteoric leap from 92nd place last year to rank 44th in 2026. The Ubud institution is being lauded for its “hyper-local” and “eco-conscious” philosophy.
Asia’s 50 Best highlighted the restaurant’s immersive, seasonal approach, which serves as a powerful representation of Indonesia’s progressive culinary movement. The ranking reinforces Ubud’s reputation not just as a cultural heartland, but as a world-class hub for sustainable gastronomy.
A Strategic Win for “Wonderful Indonesia”
Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana praised the achievements, noting that the success of these establishments is a vital promotional tool for the nation’s tourism image.
“This shows that the gastronomic richness of the archipelago has global competitiveness when combined with innovation, quality, and strong storytelling,” Widiyanti said in an official statement on Saturday. “Culiner is a vital part of the travel experience, and Indonesia has a massive asset to continue developing as a world-class destination.”
The Ministry indicated that the 2026 rankings align with the “Wonderful Indonesia” spirit, which increasingly places high-value, sustainable gastronomy at the center of its strategic development. By showcasing local ingredients through a modern lens, these restaurants are helping to shift the perception of Indonesian food from traditional street fare to sophisticated, globally respected art.
As the industry looks toward the rest of the year, the success of August and Locavore NXT is expected to inspire a new wave of local chefs to embrace their heritage while pushing the boundaries of precision and creativity.
