Jakartaweekly.com – The Jakarta Provincial Government is set to transform the city’s heart into a vibrant festive hub this Friday, March 20. A special Car Free Night will be held along Jalan MH Thamrin and Jalan Sudirman from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM WIB to celebrate Malam Takbiran (the eve of the Muslim festival, Eid al-Fitr).
Under the theme “Eid Mubarak Jakarta: Rhythm of Fountain,” the festivities centered around the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout will feature a mix of traditional percussion and modern visual spectacles. Highlights include:
Traditional Performances: Rampak Bedug and a 1,000-Drum Festival.
Cultural Procession: A torch relay featuring 5,000 participants.
High-Tech Displays: Dancing fountains, synchronized lighting, laser shows, and flying LED displays.
Spiritual Reflection: A religious address by Ustadz Akri and a special performance by renowned singer Hadad Alwi.
Governor Pramono Anung described the initiative as a breakthrough aimed at offering residents and visitors a fresh way to experience the capital’s spiritual atmosphere during the holiday season.
“I have approved the Car Free Night from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. This is about providing a new experience for the community to enjoy the Eve of Victory,” Governor Pramono stated at City Hall.
The program is part of the “Mudik ke Jakarta” (Homecoming to Jakarta) campaign. It aims to position the capital as an inclusive, warm, and festive destination for those spending the holidays in the city, rather than following the traditional exodus to the provinces.
To ensure public safety, strict traffic diversions will be in place. Private vehicles will be prohibited from entering the designated zones during the event. However, public transit remains a priority to ensure the area remains accessible.
“Private vehicles are not permitted, but Transjakarta buses will continue to operate so that the public can still commute and enjoy the festivities,” the Governor added.
The Provincial Government invites all residents to join the celebration, emphasizing the importance of maintaining order and celebrating the spirit of brotherhood amidst Jakarta’s diversity.
