JAKARTA, Jakartaweekly.com — State-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daop 1 Jakarta has warned it will close the JPL 86 level crossing on Jalan Ampera, near Bekasi Timur Station, if it is not fully guarded 24 hours a day.

KAI Daop 1 Jakarta Public Relations Manager Franoto Wibowo said that proper guarding is a crucial factor in the operation of level crossings, as it is directly related to the safety of train journeys and road users.

“If the JPL 86 level crossing on Jalan Ampera cannot be guarded continuously for 24 hours every day, then for the sake of public safety, KAI will take firm action by closing the crossing,” Franoto said in statement on Friday, May 1, 2026.

As an initial step to improve safety, KAI installed a temporary gate at the location on April 29, 2026. The facility is intended to be managed through community self-help efforts in coordination with the local administrative office.

In the absence of personnel on duty, the gate must remain in a closed position as a safety measure.

The installation has been coordinated with the Bekasi City Transportation Agency and the Duren Jaya sub-district administration in East Bekasi. Going forward, KAI will push for a permanent solution, such as the construction of a grade-separated crossing in the form of a flyover or underpass.

KAI also urged the public to remain vigilant when passing through level crossings by stopping briefly and ensuring it is safe before proceeding.

For the record, at the level crossing, an electric taxi was struck by a commuter train. The train, which had come to a stop, was then hit by the long-distance Argo Bromo Anggrek service. As a result, several people were killed and dozens of others were injured.
