Jakarta Sinks: Lenteng Agung Road Collapses, Triggering Huge Jams

JAKARTA, Jakartaweekly.com — The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI) is taking swift action to handle a severe road collapse on Jalan Lenteng Agung Raya, South Jakarta. To support emergency underground drainage repairs managed by the Water Resources (SDA) Agency, the southbound lane of Jalan Lenteng Agung leading towards Depok has been temporarily closed starting Monday (1/6) at 14:00 WIB until Tuesday (2/6) at 05:00 WIB.

This emergency intervention follows severe traffic gridlocks that choked the route from Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, towards Margonda and Kelapa Dua, Depok, stretching from Thursday night through Friday morning. The massive congestion was triggered by a sudden road collapse that swallowed nearly two-thirds of the main thoroughfare.

According to an on-the-scene report by Jakartaweekly.com journalist Michelle S. Garot, the cave-in created a massive crater roughly 4 meters in diameter and 2 meters deep. Consequently, the standard three-lane highway has been heavily bottlenecked, squeezing all car and motorcycle traffic into a single passable lane.

The Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, Budi Awaluddin, inspected the site on Monday (1/6/2026) and extended a formal apology to the public for the severe disruption.

“We deeply apologize for the temporary closure of Jalan Lenteng Agung heading south toward Depok starting today… This closure is absolutely necessary to facilitate critical underground drainage repairs by the Water Resources Agency,” Budi stated.

Traffic Diversion Schemes

To mitigate the gridlock, the Jakarta Transportation Agency has mapped out several alternative routes for motorists:

1. Standard Vehicles (From Pasar Minggu toward Depok):

Alternative Route I: Take Jalan Raya Lenteng Agung ==> make a U-turn (North-to-North) at the railway crossing JPL 23 or the Universitas Pancasila U-turn, proceed to Jalan Moch. Kahfi II ==> Jalan Tanah Baru, and onward.
Alternative Route II: Make a U-turn at the horseshoe (tapal kuda) flyover in front of the Institute of Social and Political Sciences (IISIP) Jakarta ==> pass Jalan Raya Lenteng Agung ==> Jalan TB Simatupang ==> Jalan Kebagusan Raya or Jalan Raya Cilandak KKO ==> head toward Jalan Moh. Kahfi I, and onward.
Alternative Route III: Travel via Jalan TB Simatupang ==> Jalan Raya Bogor ==> Jalan Akses UI, and onward.

2. Heavy-Tonnage Vehicles (From Tanjung Barat toward Depok):

Heavy vehicles are strongly directed to take toll roads via the Jagorawi Toll Road or the Desari (Depok-Antasari) Toll Road.
Non-toll alternative: Travel via Jalan TB Simatupang ==> Jalan Raya Bogor ==> Jalan Akses UI, and onward.

On-Ground Deployment and Public Awareness

To keep the city moving, the Transportation Agency has deployed personnel to crucial choke points, particularly around the Horseshoe Flyover and the Universitas Pancasila U-turn, to actively guide drivers through the detours.

“We have stationed officers around the site to navigate residents toward alternative paths. We urge the public to closely follow our officers’ instructions on the ground for everyone’s safety,” Budi added.

In addition to physical deployment, the agency has put up seven strategic information banners—five along the main corridor leading to Depok and two within the Lenteng Agung area—to provide early warnings to approaching motorists.

The Jakarta Provincial Government continues to coordinate across multiple agencies to accelerate the repair process and minimize the lingering impact on public mobility. Commuters are highly advised to adjust their travel schedules, utilize the designated detours, and prioritize safety when passing near the construction zone.
