Litter Problem Hits Jakarta’s Newly Opened Taman Bendera Pusaka

Jakartaweekly.com – The Jakarta Provincial Government has responded to public complaints regarding cleanliness at Taman Bendera Pusaka, a recently opened public park in South Jakarta. Despite the availability of waste bins throughout the grounds, litter has been spotted scattered across several areas of the park.

Through the City Parks and Urban Forest Agency (Dinas Pertamanan dan Hutan Kota/Distamhut), the provincial government is calling on visitors to take greater personal responsibility for keeping public spaces clean.

Head of the Agency, M. Fajar Sauri, stressed the importance of active public participation in maintaining the park’s cleanliness. “The government continues to work on providing adequate facilities. However, keeping our parks clean ultimately depends on community participation. We urge all visitors to be disciplined about disposing of their waste properly,” Fajar said in Jakarta on Monday (23/3).

To strengthen on-ground supervision, Distamhut has deployed contracted cleaning personnel (PJLP) across the park. These officers are actively reminding visitors not to litter. Information boards detailing park rules and cleanliness guidelines have also been installed at multiple locations as part of an ongoing public education effort.

As a follow-up measure, Fajar confirmed that his office has coordinated with the Jakarta Environment Agency (Dinas Lingkungan Hidup), which will soon add new waste management facilities to the park. The additions include ten units of three-compartment sorting bins, five 600-liter waste containers, and six 200-liter wheeled trolley bins.

The Jakarta Provincial Government emphasized that maintaining cleanliness cannot rest solely on facility provision — it requires a collective shift in public awareness. Early environmental education, officials noted, is key to building lasting habits of cleanliness and environmental care.

With stronger collaboration between government and citizens, authorities hope that Taman Bendera Pusaka can be sustainably maintained as a clean, comfortable, and enjoyable public space for all Jakartans.
