JAKARTA, Jakartaweekly.com —House of Tugu Old Town Jakarta has been named to Time Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places 2026, making it the only Indonesian property to earn a spot on this year’s prestigious global list.
The annual recognition highlights destinations worldwide for their cultural significance, unique experiences, and impact on global travel.
For the Tugu family, the recognition reflects a deeper mission beyond hospitality—preserving Indonesia’s cultural heritage. The journey began in the 1960s when founder Anhar Setjadibrata started rescuing historical artefacts across the archipelago, laying the foundation for what would become Tugu Hotels & Restaurants Group.
Today, under co-owner Lucienne Anhar, the vision continues. “We never set out to build a hotel empire—we set out to protect a civilization,” she said.
Time specifically highlighted the property for its role in preserving Peranakan heritage, offering a rare public space where history, art, and storytelling converge. More than a hotel, the property functions as a living museum of Indonesian identity.
Looking ahead, House of Tugu will expand its cultural offerings with new experiences, including the launch of De Tiger, a poolside speakeasy and live music venue in May 2026, followed by The Huang Museum in June 2026, showcasing thousands of artefacts from Tugu’s private collection.
As global travelers increasingly seek authentic and meaningful experiences, the recognition reinforces Indonesia’s position as a cultural destination—placing House of Tugu at the forefront of that narrative.
